Few things can make an affordable home unaffordable more quickly than high energy bills. Energy costs are often overlooked, but are a crucial piece to the affordability of a home. There is no widely accepted threshold that establishes energy cost-burden. However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services classifies an energy burden above 6% as “unaffordable”. With this tool you can look at average energy costs by county as well as the average burden those costs place on household budgets.
